Modeling of Water Quality Indicators in the Western Baltic Sea: Seasonal Oxygen Deficiency

چکیده

Abstract Hypoxia in coastal seas is a severe threat to marine ecosystems, with the Baltic Sea exhibiting largest hypoxic areas worldwide. While perennial oxygen deficiency deep basins component of environmental assessments, seasonal shallow not routinely assessed. Current measurements alone cannot provide spatio-temporal resolution needed for highly dynamic deficiency, making estimations on its duration and extent uncertain. Utilizing long-term 3D model simulations horizontal 3 nautical miles, we analyzed development western Sea. Different metrics (near-bottom area, water volume, duration, frequency) critical concentrations were exemplary sub-basins as defined by Helsinki Commission. Our results indicate that has continually increased second half twentieth century until end 1980s slightly decreased last two decades. In 1950s, spatial was still at low plateau before increasing, indicating this period could be suitable reference representing good status, including naturally occurring deficiency. Overall, indicator describing ecological status For an application eutrophication areas, sufficient which can gained combination measurements. Further analysis integrate situ obtain most reliable approach.

Seasonal dynamics and decadal changes of benthic foraminiferal assemblages in the western Baltic Sea (NW Europe)

Living benthic foraminiferal assemblages were monitored between January and July 2004 in the Kiel Bight, Baltic Sea. Phytoplankton blooms and the deposition of organic detritus were depicted by fluorometer hydro casts and pigment concentrations in surface sediments. Three depositional pulses of organic matter were identified by high phytoplankton concentrations above the sea floor and elevated ...

the effect of taftan pozzolan on the compressive strength of concrete in the environmental conditions of oman sea (chabahar port)

cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...

Hydro-economic modelling of cost-effective transboundary water quality management in the Baltic Sea

Helcom's recently revised Baltic Sea Action Plan (BSAP) aims to reduce eutrophication in the, Baltic Sea by reducing nutrient loads from all discharging drainage basins. The BALTCOST costminimisation, model, featuring abatement cost and effect functions which utilise spatial data down to, 10 10 km grid cell resolution, is used to identify a cost-effective distribution of nutrient abatement, mea...
